{"id":5694533,"uuid":"9925f3c1-f429-481c-a320-83a633beba82","name":"Stop SHARK Finning Reflection","description":"<p><strong>Blue Seas Protection calls for ALL commercial fishing of sharks, including Shark Ray Skate, within UK waters to be stopped.<\/strong><\/p><p><\/p><p>Shark Finning is the cruel and wasteful practice of removing a shark\u2019s fins at sea and discarding its finless body back into the sea, causing the shark to drown.<\/p><p><\/p><p>Despite the new Shark Fins Act 2023, beautiful Sharks are still being caught within UK waters, but are 'landed' in other European countries before being 'finned', to evade the UK Shark Fin Regulations 2003, which state that 'fins have to remain attached to the body' at the point of 'landing' the shark in another EU port BEFORE being 'finned'. EU ports namely Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, France, Italy. The UK does not allow sharks, other than Shark Ray Skate, to be landed or finned within the UK.<\/p><p><\/p><p>After 'finning' the shark within a European Fishery, the shark's body is disposed of 'unused'. The Shark Fins are exported predominantly to Hong Kong SAR, Singapore &amp; Taiwan to make tasteless Shark Fin Soup. Shark fin has little to no taste and the soup is heavily flavoured with other animal meats.<\/p><p><\/p><p><strong>Help raise awareness of this issue: this iconic Shark design, depicts all the fins that are removed from the shark.<\/strong><\/p><p><\/p><p><strong>Shark Fin Fact:<\/strong> <strong><em>Who is the Top Exporter of Shark Fin Globally? Not Japan!<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><\/p><p>In fact, Spain is the largest Global exporter of Shark Fins (2003-2020), with 188,368 metric tons of Shark <strong>Fin<\/strong> (excluding the sharks bodies!) traded. Spain accounted for a quarter of that total...Spain is licensed to catch Shark within UK waters...<\/p><p><\/p><p><strong>Shark Sad Fact:<em> Sharks are in trouble...<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><\/p><p>Despite being a top fearsome predator, many of the 500+ species of shark are actually experiencing serious levels of pressure. And whilst we might not want 'jaws' swimming around when we are paddling in the sea, sharks play a vital role in the health of the oceans.
